There is joy and power in the ability to transfer an image to an encaustic surface using your hands and a few simple tools. Encaustic Transfer is an intermediate workshop for artists who have taken Basic Encaustic and would like to learn an abundance of encaustic transfer techniques.

What you will learn

• Start with a clean slate! Learn two methods for preparing a smooth, white encaustic surface for transfers
• Transfer toner-based images – photos or illustrations – onto a prepared encaustic surface
• Introduce gesture to your paintings through the transfer of drawn images
• Explore metal leaf. Learn when and how to apply
• Introduce text onto your artwork as a visual and literary element
• Consider your images. Talk about ways of bringing reproduced images into your art while preserving your artistic integrity

Student Work

Photo Transfer Experiment

Here the artist layered an image of a flower over a structured, architectural image of a train tunnel. Surreal and cinematic, this is a classic example of the effects you can create by transferring photographed images onto an encaustic surface.

Drawing Transfer Experiment

You can add drawn marks to your encaustic work by transferring them from other materials. Here the artist used joss paper and sketchbook drawings to transfer metallic and graphite marks which add a personal quality to her simple composition.
